How We Move in London

This is the third article pertaining to the Rethink program.  In this economic environment it is essential that we as Londoners find means to make better use of this great city’s assets & infrastructure.  We need to continue to attract people who will bring their ideas & businesses, to our fair city.

The way in which people move throughout a city greatly influences the pattern of development and the overall quality of life for its residents. Places designed for automobiles have a different street pattern than do places designed for pedestrian traffic. Providing a range of transportation options is essential to a city’s economic strength and competitive edge.

Compact developments with a mix of uses are one way to support a range of transportation options – walking, cycling, transit, and the personal vehicle. This type of development creates communities where housing, workplaces, shops, community services, educational and leisure opportunities are all accessible by many modes of transportation – not just the automobile.

A transportation system is a city’s largest public asset, both from an infrastructure and public space perspective. If the system is designed to move people and goods effectively, it creates economic opportunity and fosters a sense of community.

What would you suggest to make your city more walkable?

What would improve the way you travel in the city and how would make your city more accessible?

How can we encourage greater use of public transit?
